MAAP STARS Shine in Mankato

The Fergus Falls Area Learning Center MAAP STARS Team competed in its 18th annual MAAP STARS Spring Conference this past Thursday and Friday in Mankato, MN.

Students competed in a variety of events and were recognized for their accomplishments. 20 students competed, the largest team Fergus Falls has ever had in attendance. All students earned gold, silver, and bronze ribbons in one or more of their events.

The following students earned medals and plaques for being in the top eight or less in their event:

Team Events:
Community Service Project - Team: Justin Anderson, Lily Davis, Krista Island, and Alex Donaldson placed first. 
Team Video Promotion - Shane Baur, Grady Pelaccio, Alicia Sanvig place first.
Entrepreneurship - Andee Bach, Sydney Fiedler placed first.
 
Individual Events:
Job Manual - Finn Nkaire placed first.
Career Portfolio - Kallie Karsten placed first
Employment Interview - Shane Baur placed 5th, Andee Bach placed 6th, Jesus Carrillo placed 7th, Krista Island placed 8th
Public Speaking - Mellie Hughes placed 5th

ALC Summer Credit Recovery

The Area Learning Center of Fergus Falls is offering Summer Credit Recovery!Credit Recovery Registration Button

Who should attend?

  • Students currently behind in earning credit toward graduation

  • Students beyond graduation date

  • Students from any of these graduation classes: 2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026

  • Open to students outside or not enrolled in Fergus Falls Public Schools

  • NOTE: Sessions start June 12 at 9am. There is NO ORIENTATION for this program.

Requirements:

  • A referral must be made by school district personnel

  • All special education (in person or by email)

  • All 504 documents submitted (in person or by email)

  • End of year transcript submitted (in person or by email)

 
Format

  • ~ NO ORIENTATION ~

  • In person instruction - students will be required to attend scheduled class meetings

  • Grading will be Pass/Fail for all courses enrolled in

  • Digital curriculum will be used for some but not all courses

  • Math will be offered with in person instruction ONLY

  • Schedule: classes meet 5 days a week, Monday - Friday, from 9:00am - 1:00pm

  • Students will be required to attend a learning lab

  • When students complete the required course work, they will no longer be required to attend

  • All courses are taught by licensed teachers

  • Breakfast and lunch are available each day at no cost

  • Location: Kennedy Secondary School

  • Transportation is available for students who live within the Fergus Falls School District limits
Dates

  • June 12 - August 11

  • Break: July 1 - July 16

 
Curriculum Content

  • Math: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II

  • English: English 9; English 10; Literature, English 11; Public Speaking, English Elective; all English classes are available

  • Social Studies: Geography; U.S. History; World History; Economics; Government

  • Science: Biology; Physical Science; Physics; Chemistry

  • Art: Art Appreciation (digital curriculum)

  • Electives: Career Exploration, LIfetime Sports, and other digital curriculum options

About the Area Learning Center

The Fergus Falls Area Learning Center is a choice alternative education program. “Our mission is to foster a caring and respectful environment with a focus on real world learning.”

The Area Learning Center of Fergus Falls has a long history of providing educational options, and has been in existence since 1982. Students and their parents have a variety of program options to choose from when enrolling at the Area Learning Center of Fergus Falls. These program options include: Middle School ALC; High School Day Program; Independent Study; Credit Recovery; and Credit Recovery Summer School. All students must meet state criteria for participation in an alternative school. Students are eligible to participate through age 21.

Relationships and challenging curriculum are a key components of the programs the Area Learning Center. The ALC is committed to establishing and maintaining relationships with students, parents, and community supports, along with working to meet individual student needs. The ALC applies a variety of techniques to support students in earning their high school diploma.
